Learn to read a design Close Start by looking at objects, not thread colors.
Find the layers. What sits behind another object? What overlaps it? Make a tentative order from back to front.Choose a stitch type. Consider a fill for a broad area, satin for a suitable narrow area, or a run for a line or travel path. These are starting questions, not automatic rules.Draw the direction. Use parallel pencil strokes to show how you want the stitches to lie. Consider the shape and the effect you want.Plan travel. Mark a green start and red end if useful. Add tie-in, tie-off, and trim cues where you intend to use them.Decide on outlines. An outline can follow its fill or wait until later. Overlap and coverage help you decide.Review the sequence. Repeated colors are allowed. Explain why each object sews at that point.🟢 Start · 🔴 End · ⊕ Tie-in · ⊗ Tie-off · ✂ Trim · ✊ Punch · crossed fist: do not punch · 🚗 Travel · R Run · S Satin · F Fill · A Appliqué
These worksheet symbols are learning conventions, not FTCU stitch commands. Use the fist to record a punch-through intention, the crossed fist to keep an overlap, and the car plus an arrow to sketch travel. Stitch letters label an intended technique.
Density, compensation, stitch length, and underlay depend on fabric, thread, technique, and testing. Record your instructor’s guidance in the settings field, then validate with a sew-out.
